The Empire State Building is one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, built in just 18 months during the Great Depression, it was the world's tallest building from 1931-1972.
The shape of this building was heavily influenced by Manhattan zoning codes that required buildings to get narrower in their upper stories.
The observation tower at the top was originally intended for mooring airships, though this never happened because of strong winds at the high altitude.
The top of the building is lit up at night in different colors to celebrate various holidays. For a long time after Sept. 11, 2001, it was continuously lit red, white, and blue.
The height of the antenna has been increased from 443.2 meters (1454 feet) to 448.7 meters (1472 feet).
The Empire State Buildings design was inspired by a pencil with the word's "Make it tall enough so that it does not fall down"
After 9/11/01 it regained its title as the tallest building in NYC
It was placed on the former site of the Astoria Hotel
On a Saturday, July 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into 79th floor that housed the Catholic War Relief Services. Only 14 people died and the Empire State Building reopened 2 days later.
The 86th floor observatory is visited by 3.5 milllion people every year. A photo tour of it can be found at http://t101.000k.net/esb/

Original cost was $40,948,000, a very low figure for a building of this size at that time given that it was constructed during the onset of the Great Depression.
